We have been busy working on studying non-fiction and learning the best strategies to read and understand these kinds of texts.
This week we started thinking about determining importance and today we decided to back up a little and instead of thinking about it with a challenging article, we thought about first in terms of what to bring on a camping trip (and with this list of 7 items, we decided the following order: food, flashlight, sleeping bag, book, deck of cards, an umbrella, and finally a tv remote).
Afterwards, kids worked in partnerships to determine importance when packing 15 different items for a trip to an unknown destination. Their conversations were so intriguing and they were still buzzing about it on the way to lunch! They were so thoughtful about their decisions. Here are some of the outcomes:
